Fear, Anger, Confusion and the Urgency of Hope
If you're not familiar with the term samvega, you may have felt it: the agitation, fear, or trembling that can arise in response to the challenges of life. Rather than being obstacles, these feelings can serve as catalysts to deepen our practice and help us navigate the world with new insight. This urgency is similar to the Buddha's realization of the nature of existence and the path out of suffering. When paired with pasada, a sense of hope and confidence, it can transform confusion and anger into clarity and purpose.
These teachings reflect the heart of Buddhism: a fusion of realism and optimism. Realism acknowledges the suffering and violence in the world, while optimism draws on our past resilience and the skills we've developed to endure. In this daylong retreat, we’ll explore how to face the challenges of our time with dignity and insight.
